Ping and route

Ping tells you how far away a host is; traceroute and MTR show the path hop by hop. It runs from places around the world, not from your device.

Check type

Ping, traceroute and MTR: what is the difference?

Ping sends a few small packets to the target and times their return. The minimum is closest to the real network distance, and loss shows how many never came back. Some servers do not answer ping, so a failure does not always mean the target is down.

Traceroute shows the path step by step: each router the packet passes is a hop. MTR repeats that several times and gives each hop’s latency and packet loss; it is the best tool for finding where a path gets slow or breaks.
