SSL certificate

Check a site’s certificate, or read a certificate (PEM).

Have a certificate (PEM)?

What does an SSL certificate do?

An SSL certificate (properly called TLS) does two things: it encrypts the connection between you and the site, and it proves the site you reached really is the name in the address bar. A certificate authority signs it, and browsers trust only known authorities.

Every certificate expires; free Let’s Encrypt certificates last 90 days and usually renew themselves. If renewal fails, browsers show a security warning and most visitors leave.
